Every dentist in Perth has an obligation under the Australian Dental Association (ADA) to adhere to their Code of Ethics. To us, however, the Code of Ethics is a bare minimum of the standard of care that a patient should receive. We like to go a step further and treat all of our patients with the same standard of care we would provide for a family member.
The Code of Ethics
So, why is the code of ethics so important? It provides a framework for the care that any patient should receive from any dentist. There is a responsibility of care that obligates all dentists to promote the safety, welfare and health of their patients at all times. For this reason, The ADA has provided a set of guidelines for dentists to follow. Here are some of the highlights.
Dentists are only allowed to perform procedures that are judged to be within their areas of competence. If a procedure is needed that they are not qualified to provide, they are required to refer you to a qualified professional who is able to perform the work.
Dentists are responsible, not only for the treatment they provide, but all services provided by anyone in their employ. Nobody is allowed to delegate any treatment to anyone who isn’t fully qualified and licensed to provide that procedure.
Confidentiality and Veracity
Accurate records must be kept at all times. In addition, those records should be kept confidential. Patients are allowed to have copies of all records created around their treatment. Information can be provided to others only with the written consent of the patient.
Dentists are also required to fully inform each patient of his or her condition and options for treatment. They are not allowed to provide treatments that aren’t necessary.
