As a provider of dental surgery services in Perth, we take patient safety seriously. Recently, the Dental Board of Australia (DBA) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) collaborated to create “Tips for Dental Patients,” which is a set of guidelines for the public to make sure they are receiving safe, competent dental tooth care.
We agree with this wholeheartedly and would like to share the basic concepts with you.
Registered Practitioners Only
AHPRA has an online site on which all health practitioners including dental practitioners must be registered to provide dental services, whether in Perth and across Australia. Always check to make sure your practitioner is registered. Here is the website address: http://www.ahpra.gov.au/Registration/Registers-of-Practitioners.aspx
Personal Sanitation
There are three “tips” that have to do with personal and environmental sanitation on the part of the dentist. First, your dentist must wear appropriate clothing, a mask and gloves. They should also use eyewear to protect them from transmission of bloodborne viruses. The surgical facility must look clean and tidy. If it doesn’t look sanitary on the surface, it won’t be sanitary underneath. In addition, there must be a nearby sink for hand-washing.
These are all vital because everyone and everything is a storehouse for bacteria and viruses. Your dentist and the treatment room must adhere to sanitation standards required by the industry.
Clean Instruments
Your dentist must work with an assistant. This is vital in keeping tools sterile at all times. The tools being used will be in contact with your blood and the inside of your teeth. It is vital that they remain sterile. All instruments must be clean. In addition, many of them are required to be disposable, one-use items. All of these items are crucial.
Ask the dentist if the instruments are sterilised and if they have an autoclave.
