Many children in the Perth area are eligible but their parents are unaware. The Australian Government Department of Human Services (DHS) provides basic dental care for children aged from 2-17 if they meet basic conditions for eligibility.
The Conditions
The DHS assesses the eligibility of any child between 2-17 years of age at the beginning of each calendar year. If approved for free dental care, the authorisation lasts the entire year. Here are the basic conditions.
The child must be between two and seventeen years of age for at least one day of that particular calendar year. They must also be eligible for Medicare. Then, they have to meet any of the following conditions for at least one day of the year.
- The parent, guardian or carer of the child receives Parenting Payment, Family Tax Benefit Part A or Double Orphan Pension.
- The child receives Carer Payment, Abstudy, Family Tax Benefit Part A, Youth Allowance, Special Benefit or Parenting Payment.
- The child is 16 or older, making them ineligible to be claimed as a dependent, and receives Veterans Children Education Scheme assistance or Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act Education and Training Scheme assistance.
- A teenager’s partner receives Parenting Payment or Family Tax Benefit Part A.
Any of the above conditions makes a child eligible for free dental benefits.
