One of the mainstays of preventative dentistry is flossing the teeth. We have taught thousands of patients in the Perth area to floss correctly. It is important for removing food particles and plaque from places a toothbrush won’t reach. This usually means between the teeth and under the gumline.
Flossing is important because plaque can often lead to gum disease or tooth decay. Consequently, it is recommended that you floss every day if possible.
Steps for Effective Flossing
The first step is to cut about 45 cm of floss. Wrap most of it around each middle finger, leaving around 6 cm of floss between them. Holding the floss between each thumb and index finger, put the floss between your teeth and slide it up and down. Then, curve the floss below the gum line and around the base of each tooth. To remove the floss, use the same back and forth motion but away from the teeth.
Be careful not to force or snap the floss, as you may bruise or cut your gums. Remember that the gum tissue is delicate, especially near the base of the teeth. As you move from tooth to tooth, use clean sections of floss.
