We offer emergency dentistry, preventative dentistry and general dentistry in Perth. A lot of people come to us in an emergency with a toothache and end up staying with us to take control of their dental health. One common problem is people who have sensitive teeth. There are a lot of reasons for sensitive teeth.
We take care of sensitive teeth on two levels. We can recommend products to make them not as sensitive and we can try to fix the underlying factors. Sometimes only one option or the other works. Here are a few strategies for taking care of sensitive teeth.
Special Toothpaste
Sometimes, we can’t really find anything overtly wrong with teeth or we can’t fix the condition that is making them sensitive. Some people seem to naturally have sensitive teeth. For these situations, we recommend using toothpaste that is made for sensitive teeth. This often takes care of the problem. Sometimes, though, it doesn’t, but it’s worth a shot in certain situations.
Fluoride Gel
Often, sensitive teeth are due to weakened enamel. Fluoride gel can help strengthen the enamel of the teeth, reducing sensitivity. Once again, this can often be a simple fix, but there are often more underlying problems.
Bonding, Inlay or Crown
Sometimes, sensitivity is due to cavities. Heat and cold sensitivity often fit into this category. This is when standard filling, bonding, inlays and crowns are often used. We need a full examination including x-rays to determine the need for any of these solutions.
Gum Grafting
On rare occasions, loss of gum tissue is the cause of pain and sensitivity. This can be corrected by grafting.
