Although we offer emergency dental services, we advocate preventative dentistry and sound oral hygiene to keep you from having dental emergencies. Recently, we came across an article that made us realise just how lucky we are to be living in an area such as Perth. This is where dentists are so available that we are often taken for granted.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Report on Preventative Dentistry
Recently, the RFDS published a report called “Filling the Gap: Disparities in Oral Health Access and Outcomes Between Major Cities and Remote and Rural Australia.” The main takeaway: children in remote areas who don’t have access to preventative dentistry have 55% as many cavities as children in major cities. They have twice as many filled teeth.
In major cities, one in ten people (children and adults combined) have a tooth extracted in a period of one year. In remote areas, one out of three people has a tooth extracted in a one year period. For indigenous Australians, the number rises to 57%.
Why are These Numbers so Disparate? Because of the Ratio of Dentists to People.
In Cities:
- There is an average of 72 dentists for every 100,000 people.
In Remote Areas:
- There are only 22 dentists for every 100,000 people.
What it Means to You
This study proves beyond a doubt that preventative dentistry, consisting of good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist, makes you much less likely to have dental problems leading to fillings, root canals, extractions and other procedures. We already knew about the connection between regular visits and healthy teeth, but this study makes it painfully obvious for all to see.
